“Beneath The Surface,” is a hard-hitting Pandora’s Box action thriller centred around big time financier
John Layton’s dedication to the cause of ridding the world of anti-personnel land-mines; a dedication that turns to obsession when
he learns of an international arms dealer on his own doorstep hell bent on producing cheap dumb-mines and cornering the international
black market.
His wife, Elaine, a beautiful if slightly neurotic women, who struggles to live up to the high ideals and beliefs
of her husband, sees that personal obsession and ego have tempted John to step recklessly into a world to which he does not belong;
into “a mine-field of his own making,” whilst inadvertently dragging her into the very heart of it.
This is a dark, hard-hitting
SP that works on many levels. It’s main theme is the male desire for power at all costs; the blindness of human ego and the confused
nature of desire, spirituality, and self-fulfilment.
A satire of movie types also takes place in this SP, most notably the Bond-like
killer, Mark McKiernan. By the end of “Beneath The Surface,” viewers are left in no doubt as to what kind of human being such a person
would likely be in a real world setting.
The scene in which British arms-dealer Bamber Rosewood shows McKiernan his collection
of various landmine types may be seen as a real world send up of the British character M showing Bond around the toy shop of weaponry.
Working
on many levels “Beneath The Surface,” pulls no punches; having said that, nothing that happens is gratuitous or without purpose. The
story itself is an all action thriller that will enthral movie-lovers whilst educating them about the world landmine situation and
challenging them to think.
